Reference architecture

Aims

The creation of service robots suited for everyday use urgently requires that different technologies are converged. This, in turn, demands that the Service Robotics Lead Innovation Initiative takes a number of measures and actions. These most notably include creating an "everyday" technology platform that, by virtue of (hardware and software) reference architecture, provides the framework for combining and integrating a wide variety of hardware and software components. In terms of software, an unequivocal architecture concept with clear interface definitions and performance parameters needs to be developed and then implemented in high-performance middleware.

Creating reference architecture and an integration framework for hardware and software is one of the key aims not only of the "Architecture" work package, but also for the entire DESIRE project. It is the Applicant's opinion that the availability of reference architecture is not only essential for DESIRE, but also promises to deliver a catalyst effect for the development of new service robotics products in Germany that goes beyond the collaborative project.

Method Given the demands placed on the "everyday" technology platform and the specific applications, the subject of "Architecture" should be advanced in three complementary directions:
  • development of modular reference architecture and corresponding middleware
  • development of control architecture for the technology platform
  • development of concepts for systemic suitability for everyday use

Envisaged results
  • Modular reference architecture and integration framework for service robots
  • Reusable control components for service robots
  • Own models for system components and their co-action
  • Tools to support the architectural draft
  • Mechanisms for systemic suitability for everyday use
