DESIRE (Deutsche Servicerobotik Initiative - Germany Service Robotics Initiative) is a collaborative project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of its "Service Robotics Innovation Lead Initiative".

The primary objective of DESIRE is to maintain and build on the leading role held by German researchers and industry in the field of service robotics.

The individual objectives of DESIRE are as follows:
  • To achieve a technological edge towards attaining key functions and components that are suited for everyday use

  • To promote the convergence of technologies through integration into a common technology platform

  • To conduct pre-competition research and development activities for new products and technology transfer in start-up enterprises in the field of service robotics

The consortium comprises three partners each from research institutes, universities, major corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises.

The project was launched on 1 October 2005.
