The university was founded in 1457 by Archduke Albrecht VI in the town of Freiburg, in the south-west of Germany. The Institute of Informatics deals, among other things, with the development of intelligent agents and machinery within its Principles of Artificial Intelligence department, whilst the focal point of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems department is the control and development of robots for a variety of practical applications. Both departments are incorporated into the research work performed by DESIRE.
